part-of-speech tagging

The process of marking a word as a particular part of speech (as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.). CLAWS is an example of a tagger, i.e. a programme that automatically adds PoS tags to text.

You can find lists of tags and their explanations here:

  • for the BYU interface
  • for the Lancaster interface of the BNC (CLAWS 5)
  • for the Penn Treebank tagset
  • …with Sketch Engine modifications
  • for the CLAWS tagset
